12:49 pm - Brief study break.
While studying for The Exam, I came across this sentence:

Editor [Charles] Cutter attempted(unsuccessfully) to use LJ as a platform to promote his decidedly more egalitarian interpretation of the role of the ALA, to stem the tide of Dewey's power gathering.

Now, LJ stands for "Library Journal," naturally. But it nonetheless created wonderful images of a Livejournal flame war in the ALA fandom's classification scheme subfandom, BNFs Dewey and Cutter having it out over whose ideas are better. Ranganathan would get in there too. Meanwhile, Anthony Panizzi is shaking his head over the stupid n00bs and lamenting for the good old days when everyone was still fanning over his alphabetical cataloging idea.

Exactly four days from this very moment, I will be finishing up the last exam I will ever take. Hopefully.

Back to studying. D:

I am officially done with my last class ever. EVER. (Until I change my mind, anyway.) I spent heinous amounts of time creating a fairly crappy website, which is here. (Feedback is awesome.) The forms and search functions don't actually work, but the boxes are there, and the links all work, and that was enough for the prof. Yaaaaaay. (All pictures used were in the public domain, ganked from LOC at Flickr.) Now all that's left is Comps.

D:

Comps will be horrible, but I've got two weeks to study for them, so hopefully I'll survive. What worries me more is that "job" thing. I'm starting to look around for them, and I'm trying not to be picky, but it's very disheartening when you go, "OOH, that looks perfect!" and then discover that it is in northern PA. But in good news, I've discovered I'll actually get my diploma in October, rather than having to wait for December!

Dudes. DUDES. WHY ISN'T ANYONE TALKING ABOUT THIS. THERE'S A SERIES CALLED "LIBRARY WAR"? I MUST FIND IT. The summary from ANN is:

In a slightly different timeline than ours, the explosion of information and misinformation came to be considered a direct threat to society. In a daring decision, it was decided to create a new government agency dedicated solely to information management. Some thirty years later, in 2019, the government still monitors and controls information, suppressing anything they find undesirable, but standing against their abuses of power are the libraries, with their special agents called ‘the book soldiers.’ (Emphasis mine.)

HOLY CRAP THAT'S THE BEST THING SINCE "READ OR DIE." C/D?

...I want to be a book soldier. I bet it would be a lot easier trying to get people to pay up on their overdue fines if I had a snazzy uniform and a huge gun.

On a more serious note, I find this interesting because in a lot of ways, this is a dramatic extension of most libraries' mission statements. It's kind of like someone in Japan said, "hey, look at this Statement on Intellectual Freedom in Libraries! They're totally saying they'll stand up against government encroachment on what they stand for! Now, let's add an oppressive government and some secret agents." (Apparently this is based on a book series. XD) Kind of makes you wonder how far the ALA and its counterparts around the world would go if they got messed with too much. To some extent, we can see even nowadays the resistance against banning books and interference from people both civilian and federal. And historically, I suppose one could look back at libraries in times of strife like World War II. I'm sure it will be laughably unrealistic, but I'm really interested to see what they do with this.

My head is ready to explode with my desperation to see "The Dark Knight." Every critic, every screening report, makes it sound better and better. I find it interesting that there apparently is serious theorizing going on that Ledger could get nominated for his role, and not just out of pity and dramatics on the Oscar Committee's part.

Other awesome movie thing I noticed the other day. In the Spider-man movies, I had caught that the Maitre'd in the third one was the same guy as the usher in the second one. A stop by imdb revealed that not only was he also the wrestling announcer in the first one, he was also Bruce Campbell. Yes, that Bruce Campbell.

Hail to the king, baby.

Family reunion this weekend in Wisconsin. I should really be packing, but it will be much more fun trying to find the requisite maroon shirt for the color-coded family picture (WTF) at 4 in the morning.

Back to printing out reams of comps stuff. Hang in there, printer!

I am so bad at updating this thing. I should be grounded and beaten and otherwise punished. D:

The other week I got to have dinner with [info]_bellisima and her family at this cool little diner down in Arlington. We had french toast and it was almost as wonderful as getting to see her again! So that was good. ♥

Last week at work was brutal- the summer reading program started up, and I think everyone in Oakton has signed up by now. It doesn't help that the computers have been ferociously slow either, but they're supposedly doing some sort of server upgrade tonight, so I'm hoping that helps a little. But yeah, I'm definitely convinced I don't want to deal with the public, (who fuss so much over 20 cent fines,) so I've been trying to keep my ears open for cataloging jobs, or something similar.

So I finished up the week long class, but the prof's mom got sick, so I haven't heard back about the final yet. And then I haven't heard from the prof in the other class about my midterm, but he's posted the final, and we don't seem to actually be doing anything on the syllabus, which fills me with grief and disappointment. It could have been an awesome class, and I'm glad he's so laidback. But on the other hand, I severely wish he would keep to his own schedule, just a little bit, and do a bit more teaching-wise. On the other other hand, at least it does give me a good reason (i.e. designing a final project) to finally sit down and try to figure out GIMP.

I'm also realizing that COMPS are less than a month away, and my feeling is pretty well summed up by "OH SHI-". Apparently, you have to basically be trying to fail it, but all the same I've been looking at old tests, and the questions, while basic, general, and pretty doable, all require so much bullshitting that it makes me tired just trying to plan them out. I guess the upside is that I only have one more month to go before I'm completely done with the whole damn thing. I won't officially graduate until December, I think, but at least I'll be done. Which reminds me- I have to remember to fill out all the forms and send them in this week.

KT and I watched all 3 discs of "The Black Donnellys", an interesting but unfortunately short-lived series that cuts off in the middle of plot. It's kind of like: "Is Dokie dead?! Did Nicky get to the hospital in time?! Is Jenny going to end up with Tommy or not?!" It's so frustrating when a series does that. :/

[info]rockontheedge has been sucked into DN as hard as me now. It is fun and entertaining and I'm netflixing the currently released DVDs this week, and I'm excited. I've constantly been putting off watching the anime because it's sort of like, after that I've seen it all (minus all but the first of the live action movies). It shall be an adventure.

In other news, I'm still refusing to watch the Naruto fillers, and the Bleach fillers, though they started out amusing, has reached the old level of painful tedium that the Bounto arc inspired in its viewers. At least the manga has been sweet lately. Also, DGM rocks my world so hard at the moment. We've got violence and angst in the anime, and crack filler in the manga. WIN.

Also, DN people should immediately watch this: DEBU NOTE )

It's like Death Note: Japanese SNL style.

Time to go finish laundry and watch the old, Angela Lansbury "Sweeney Todd."

So 3 credits in one week. It's pretty exciting, and also draining, which is why I've not been around. It was an interesting class, and we heard lectures at the Library of Congress, the Government Printing Office, Natural History Museum, and the National Library of Medicine up at NIH. It was pretty fantastic, and also I now covet the position of Rare Books Cataloger. Seriously. So many interesting things are going on with digitalization and metadata schema and online resources, etc. I have to do the final yet, but it's only about 5 pages long. So that's cool.

So, comps are on July 17 and 18. I gotta say, that seems a lot closer from this side of June 1. I suppose it's time to start studying, much to my dismay.

One of my coworkers (male) checked out Fruits Basket vols. 1 and 2 after we chatted about it when someone turned in about a jillion of them.. I find this lolarious on several levels, not least because he remembered reading it a long time ago. I don't think I've ever known a dude who liked Furuba before.

My dear, darling little sister [info]ohnonerdland keeps making me icons. She's awesome like that. And this is partially a GIP. Thanks dude! ♥

Skulduggery Pleasant: Playing With Fire is awesome. Go read the first one, and then get this one. Seriously, the first one is one of my current favorites.

Indiana Jones 4 was fun! It wasn't great cinema, but you know, it's an Indiana Jones flick! It was entertaining and fun and what more does one need from Indy, seriously?

How has everyone been? I don't know when I'll get a chance to catch up on the flist, so let me know if I missed anything cool.

Death Note was amazing. Matsuda was adorable, L was 800 kinds of supreme perfect, and the dubbing wasn't really all that bad! (Light's imaginary girlfriend was boring though.) And oh man, when L turned up with potato chips? "Nice one!" ♥ Also, Bus Driver/Light is my new favorite crack pairing.

It was kind of vexing getting to it though. It was showing at the theater closest to us, but they didn't do pre-order tickets so I bought tickets at one kind of out of the way. But when we got there, for some reason they had no power. But we magically made it to the other one with one minute to spare. It was a lot of fun, and there were even some cosplayers, which was fun to see.

Then at IHOP afterwards, [info]rockontheedge and I managed to badger my youngest sister into getting an LJ. She likes Avatar, Naruto, Death Note, and various other nerdy things, but on the whole is still a closeted nerd, if you will. Also, she made me this awesome icon. So everyone go and harass say hi to her at [info]ohnonerdland!

DUDES. I am seriously excited. Although my first class officially starts tomorrow, I am pretty happy about it (well, kind of). Someone said that "Design of Multimedia," when they took it, was mostly about making Powerpoint presentations. This syllabus though- although it's aimed at school librarians (sigh), includes such things as Web authoring, photo editing, audio applications, and flash animation, which are all things I wish I was more familiar with. The prof is also using a wiki format for the class, instead of Blackboard, which I am horribly tired of. The one "boo" is that the one in-person meeting for the class was rescheduled after I jumped through all manner of hoops to rearrange my work schedule. Oh well. The prof said that it wasn't mandatory, and that he'd probably schedule a second one anyhow. He seems to have a good sense of humor too, which is always awesome in someone with control over your GPA.

Jenny comes home tomorrow! It should make for an interesting week, especially as it's just going to be us for a few days as both my parents have business trips to go on. "Coincidentally" at the same time. I vaguely suspect them of actually running off to Hawaii or something instead.

Well, yesterday was Caturday at the library. The cat adoption fair was held in our conference room. Fortunately, they were a lot less stinky than they were last time, and I took allergy drugs ahead of time so I did not itch even after petting kittens. (Though those always make me kind of loopy and sleepy, so it was a good thing it was a pretty quiet day at work.) There was one cage with three kittens in it, and they were constantly pouncing on each other, the towel, little balls, or their own tails. Then two of them curled up and proceeded to chew on each other's heads. It was cute, in a cannibalistic sort of way.

Iron Man was fantastically awesome! My favorite movie so far this year, hands-down. It was fun and loud and full of flippant, sarcastic remarks, which is exactly my sort of movie.

I'm still alive!

One of my sisters graduated this weekend, and so the last few days were spent without internet access, alas. But there were baby geese everywhere, so that was kind of alright.

I'm so glad the semester is over. Of course, it's all going to start back up again in a couple of weeks, and then I'll be done with school for good, hopefully by the end of July or so. Of course, I won't officially have a diploma until December, I think, but I'm severely hoping that most library systems aren't going to be so anal that they won't consider me until then. Except, my opinion is that most of them are that anal. I guess it will work out though. I seriously have no idea what I'm going to do in terms of where to work, because just when I start thinking, ah, shucks, people aren't so bad, I get a patron with their head so far up their butts that they radiate toxic emotional poo. Which makes no sense, but pretend it does, because patrons are annoying. I had a real doozy of a hellbitch the other day, but currently lack the energy to write up the experience. Suffice it to say that it blew and I severely wanted to beat her to death with a barcode reader.

I finally watched Cloverfield! It was weird, but I think I liked it. I'm vaguely interested in what the hell actually happened, and it was fairly predictable, but still, it was a neat movie experiment sort of thing, so I salute Mr. Abrams for it.

11:32 pm - WTF ANNE FAILS
So I've not been around because of these damn finals. I am so close to being done. My last final, 2 essays, is due in slightly over 12 hours.

I need to write about probably around 12 pages.

I have it outlined.

This is 20% of the grade.

I should be terrified and frantically writing.

I can't even make myself care.

This is double-plus ungood.

Library school is a dumb idea. No one should ever do it.

Time to make more coffee and cannibalize old paper references. I'll try to do a real post tomorrow, but I just wanted to say "Hey!" and also procrastinate some more.

Ahahaha, so I completely forgot that my hours had been switched today, and so went into work about 800 hours early. I lost an hour in getting there, discovering my error, and coming home, but I figure at least it got me up earlier than I otherwise would have, so I actually probably gained about two hours and got an errand run on the way home to boot. On balance I'm still on top! Though that doesn't change the fact that I am Captain Spacey of the Airhead Brigade.

For some reason, Amazon thinks that I would be interested to know that something called "Peter Coffin is a Douche" is out on DVD. This was my morning dose of vitamins W, T, and F.

I don't understand why people are so infatuated with the reopening of the Newseum. It was one of the most tedious field trips we were ever sent on back in the day. It's like the media's temple to itself.

Now back to my exciting project on the World Intellectual Property Organization!

11:33 pm - At midnight I'll turn into a pumpkin. OHSHI--
So I'm trying to force myself to trudge through this project on metadata elements for internet resources and how to map things to Dublin Core, and then poop out a five page paper on it that is due in 12 hours but will actually need to be done much sooner than that as I gotta be out the door by 6:50 to catch the bus to catch the train. However, all that I can focus on is:

A: Andy Roddick finally beat Roger Federer again! Yaaaaaay! Who cares if it was due to Federer's apparently ferocious number of unforced errors? Twelfth* time is apparently the charm.

B: I finally watched "Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn" all the way through on Tuesday morning while I wrote a paper. And let me tell you, I think that when Ash made himself a special attachment so that he could have a chainsaw attached to the stump of his wrist, and had a shotgun in his remaining hand and was all like let's go kill things in the cellar- it may have been the most fantastically and epically manly thing I have ever seen. Forget hooks or robotic hands or laser guns. CHAINSAW. HAND. ATTACHMENT.** It was so amazing that it's the only thing keeping me going right now. CHAINSAW HAND. Good for dispatching Candarian demons AND inspiring burned out grad students.

So I must say I'm on the verge of despair in terms of schoolwork at the moment. Why is this worth 20% of my grade? Dammit. I'm tired of metadata. People should just settle for finding information like it's an Easter egg hunt. That's fun, right? You never know what you're going to get. Don't let these damn librarians tell you how to look! Full-text searching is the way of the future! Down with MARC tags! Burn the LCSH lists! Go go gadget informational anarchy!

Also, it's annoying, kind of, to go to a Catholic school for grad school for a program that isn't very common. Not many other Catholics in the program, it seems, which is fine but makes it awkward-feeling when everyone is mocking the Church, Pope B16, and Catholics in general for promoting Catholic values at a Catholic university (can you believe how horrible?!). Please to stop equating "pro-life" with "fascist NAZI regime OMG."

* "Twelfth" is a freakishly stupid looking word.

WHAT? AN ENTRY?

It's been awhile! How is everyone? I haven't had time to update, and to be honest, still really don't. The next month or so is going to be horrible and nasty with far more papers than is reasonable in any sense of the word. Grad school is lame. Don't do it.

Signed up for classes for the summer, finally. I'm taking "Organization of Internet Resources," which is an intensive, one-week class, and "Design and Production of Multimedia," which is almost entirely online. And then in July- COMPS. They are three and a half months away, and I'm already like OH SHI-

Despite the bizarre insistence on professors to endload the last month of the semester with about three papers each, I'm hoping to work more reading into life- especially now that Lent is over and I can get books again. I went nuts at work and checked out a massive stack of all sorts of junk- from a couple volumes of "Yotsuba&!" and "Sgt. Frog" to tomes on fancy bread-making and growing vegetables in pots, and everything in-between. Suggestions are always welcome! I'm currently reading "The Pact" by Jodi Piccoult and "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell," by Susanna Clarke, which I am loving because so far it's like "Chrestomanci" meets "The Prestige". I'm also re-reading "Death Note," which my sister is currently hooked on. She just got to "That Part" (you know the one) and is quite distraught.

Not much else going on, really. Except OMGWTF I drew a picture?

And a Bleach fanart, no less. )

DA link

I really have no excuses. Drawn using Facebook's grafitti application, and nearly lost when it wouldn't post. But thanks to a timely screencap, it can live on in a new environment. Or at least, carry on a monstrous, undead existence in shame and horror.

I want to watch TTGL again instead of writing a paper on archival outreach on the web. :/

Query: If you don't know how to do something at work, the proper response is:

A: "How do I do this?"
B: "I'm going to try to figure it out on my own."
C: "No one told me how, so I won't do it."

Query: If someone points out that you should ask how, the proper response is:

A: "Sorry! I meant to, but got sidetracked."
B: "Oh! I should have thought to ask. Sorry, brainfart."
C: "No one told me I needed to ask."

If you answered "C" to either of those, consider yourself flunked out of the University of Problem Solving. *headdeskheaddeskheaddesk*

I have registered for the summer semester! My last one! YAY. I'm taking a class in cataloging electronic resources and one in designing and producing multimedia stuff. And then comprehensive exams are July 18 and 19, which I'm just now realizing is only four months away. D: I'm pretty nervous about it, actually. But that also means that I'll be completely done within five months or so! Which is awesome, because if I had to deal with any more school than this, I think I might just explode. Like, I'd go find some C4 and dribble it like a basketball. School is the ultimate lame.

Classes are going alright- keeping me busy though. A cataloging project was assigned last week, and I've started to work on the term paper for Archives Management. My topic is efforts to make archives more relevant to potential users- outreach and ease of use type stuff. My reasoning in this is twofold- first, it shouldn't be too difficult a topic and shouldn't be over-philosophical. Second, I actually am hoping to convince myself that archives are totally useful and awesome and neato-mosquito. I am such a bad library student, but I've discovered I don't care very much about archives, although I know that they do have their uses.

My grandparents were over this weekend. The William and Mary choir was touring up here, and so they came to here my sister and company sing. They were really fantastic! And the grandparental visit wasn't too painful either. They seriously loved the Wii. It was pretty hilarious. They drank coffee and played bowling and golf most of the weekend. I'm afraid I was a boring granddaughter who spent half the time reading school assignments. But we traded some books (I gave my grandfather Guards, Guards! by Terry Pratchett and a Steven Saylor mystery to my grandmother; my grandma gave me some raunchy mystery set in ye olde Edo, which my grandpa scolded her for. It was funny, in an awkward sort of way) and went on a walk too, so that was alright.

The nice thing about going to a Catholic University is that we get an Easter holiday. Unfortunately, this only affects my Thursday class, and that has been replaced by mandatory training the county and then an extra shift at the library. Well, money is yay, yeah?

I bought Enchanted today, did 6 miles on the treadmill, and ate chocolate and strawberries. And went to work. So it was a pretty good day!

Even given that February is a very short month, it seems to have gone by much faster than is reasonable. What’s up with that? Though I must say that I’m kind of glad the time is going quickly. Do you know what's amazing? Mixing yourself a drink with a pomegranate juice base, so it's really dark and opaque, and then putting cherries in it but forgetting that they're there. Then you get to the bottom of the cup, and you're like, fuck yes there are cherries in here. I'd recommend it.

Contact lenses are really odd. It's cool, because it's just easier to deal with, but they're so hard to put in and take out and feel very odd and I keep trying to adjust the glasses I'm not wearing. I could get used to them though, I think.

So, I've got this canary now. It's pretty hilariously spastic. I'm pretty sure it's a male, as it started chirping as soon as I got it home and uncovered it, and was using two different calls within ten minutes. The thing's not shy- I was expecting it to be kind of quiet and nervous when it first got here, but that thing started flinging seeds around like it was its business.

Now, of course the important thing is giving it a good name. As my dad predicted, its original name is "Tweety." Now, I've nothing against Tweety Bird, but it's way too obvious for a canary, and far too cutesy. I've come up with a few, but have decided not to rush it.

Reginald - I've no idea why this name is appealing to me, but for some reason it is.

Fido - Because canaries are named after the Canary Islands, which were named after the big dogs on the islands. From canis, canis, f. It's a Latin joke! Canis means dog, ergo Fido, yeah? Get it? Get it!?

Catbait - It rolls off the tongue.

Mineshaft - Because mineshafts and canaries just kind of go together, yeah? Also, it would be "Shaft" for short and it would be a bad mother shut your mouth.

Carmine - Because the phrase "Sing like a canary" is typically associated with mob informers, yeah? And Carmine is kind of a mafia-y name. Also, carmine comes from the Latin word for song, so it fits doubly! Or maybe some other name along these lines. I don't know, what are some informer's names?

My parents suggesting things like "Tennis Ball" (which is too obvious- I'd have to go with Penn or Wilson or Dunlop. Now that I think of it, Dunlop might be an awesome name) or Roddick, due to my low-grade but consistent fangirling of Andy. Or Badminton, because it's shaped like a birdy, kind of. Which, then I could call him "'Minton" for short and then when he's bad he's "Bad Minton" and also is called by his full name, as one typically is called when in trouble. IDK I'm up for opinions/suggestions.

10:42 pm - NO WAY THRICE IN ONE DAY?
Lost was pretty decent- it was a good episode, though I was a little disappointed that it wasn't as hardcore awesome as previous season premieres. It had some seriously sweet moments though. I'll give it a B. Maybe because I was so tired, it was hard to be enthused. Also, nowhere near enough Sawyer, and as always far too much Jack.

I can't believe there are only 8 episodes for this whole season at the moment. Stupid writers and their stupid strike.

So apparently I'm getting a canary. Someone at my mom's workplace's mother died, and was outlived by her canary, so we're going to go pick it up tomorrow night. I'll have to think of some good names. It will be my fourth free secondhand bird.

Also, have decided to go on a crappy icon making spree, as I have none for far too many awesome series. Not even one Lost one. What's with that?

Back to work with me.

Lost starts up again tonight! Finally! Lost! I love that show. It's the best treatment of castaways hoping for rescue since Gilligan. For serious.

Schools been alright- a bit on the hectic side, unfortunately. But I suppose that's grad school for you- all these teachers unreasonably wanting you to do work. It's probably a sign of cultural decay or something.

In the last couple months, I have, on multiple occasions, spent time trying to find my glasses when I was in fact already wearing them. So I finally dragged myself to the optometrist and had my prescription updated. It wasn't a major adjustment or anything, but it will be nice to be able to read traffic signs again. And I'm finally getting contacts, which will hopefully make life easier. As for glasses frames, I was kind of steamrolled into getting cooler frames than I have the confidence for; they're a great shape, but the bottom of them is metallic purple. They are pretty and glinty, but I've never had colorful glasses before. Ah well, I suppose they'll be fine, and on more formal occasions I'll have the contacts. Could be fun! I mean, I'd not thought I was brave enough to wear a fedora out in public for any extended amount of time, but here I am, with my trenchcoat on and trusty hat at my side. I am sure that the other people in the coffee shop think I am doing super secret spy stuff (as an apparent agent of alliteration?). DC has spies all over the place, you know. (Though technically I am in Alexandria, but let it go.)

In other news, you know you have long hair when you whack off seven inches and nobody even notices.

EDITSo apparently Reepicheep is being voiced by Eddie Izzard? Prince Caspian is going to be many kinds of amazing that it's just plain silly.

08:25 pm - Hokay, so here's the Earth
Well, my laptop came back to life after a couple hours with tech support and taking it apart and putting it back together. But the files I needed were corrupted. So it became a very long week.

The Evil Dead is simultaneously one of the most hilarious and most disturbing movies ever. I loved it, while also hiding behind a pillow. I learned many things, like demonically possessed trees will rape you, cultural scientists trying to prevent people from raising demons will record the chant so that it is easily played unintentionally, and that one should never, ever go camping. I spent the whole time yelling at the characters. What a bunch of morons. SERIOUSLY. If your friends turn into demons, why would you even put the chainsaw down ever?

Sorry y'all, but if you turn green and attack me, I am chainsawing your asses like I'm deforesting a rainforest. It's just how I roll.

My fedora came! I'll have to take pictures. Because it's uber-cute. I feel like I should join either the CIA or the mafia. Either one.

And I finally got the rest of the pictures from Ohayocon! Here they are:

Ohayocon Pics, Part II )

Also, I've decided I need to marry someone both hot and disgustingly rich. Let me know if you know anyone.

Yaaaaaaay weekend. Now I just need some snow and some sleep.

Dudes. My laptop just died.

Like, "no drive found," dead.

My shiny, 6 month old laptop.

I'm in tech support chat. I think I'm talking to a chatbot. It uses words like "expeditiously" a lot.

...All of the stuff I've done so far for that presentation on Wednesday, for which our group meeting is in 10 hours, was on the laptop.
